MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) Launch
November 18, 2013

Our group of seven -- not astronauts, but intensely interested in the successful launch MAVEN
Why?  Science of course.  But also because DJ had worked on the electra radio software
Front row -  Mary, Charlie, Ginny (Mike's mother)
Back row - Mike, Karen, Sue, DJ

Thanks to Karen for setting up this photo and then getting in it.

On Sunday, Nov 17 we drove to Kennedy Visitor Center where our VIP credentials gave us free entry.  We played with the exhibits and listened to a talk by Bill Nye the science guy projected on a screen so all could see.

Then we boarded a bus for a tour of the Center

The Vehicle Assembly Building
Our tour guide was a retired NASA employee

The Atlas rocket

As close as we got to the launch site

LAUNCH DAY
We boarded a bus at 9:15 am at the Marriot Courtyard in Coral Beach.
The bus brought us to --  on the Banana River, five miles away from the launch site
We were advised not to take pictures, but to enjoy the experience.  So we did.

Here's Mary at 27.5 minutes before launch.

Our VIP status gave us another free day at the Kennedy Visitor Center so we enjoyed it

The Lunar Excursion Module (LEM)

Sue was game for all the simulations

And who couldn't resist being astronauts?

The nearby Wildlife Preserve was another special attraction

Our 5 mile hike ended with this alligator sighting on the trail

Thanks to all who took the photos I've used here.
